Ingredients:

To prepare a scrumptious batch of Tteokbokki, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 200 grams of cylinder-shaped rice cakes (Tteok)
  • 150 grams of fish cakes, sliced into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon of gochugaru (Korean red chili flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
  • 3 cups of water
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped

Optional: hard-boiled eggs, sliced cabbage, sliced carrots for additional toppings and garnish

Instructions:

  1. Make rice cakes by soaking frozen ones in cold water for 30 minutes to unfreeze. Then, rinse with cold water to remove starch.
  2. Stir-fry onion and garlic in vegetable oiled pan until transparent.
  3. Mix gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and sesame oil in a bowl for hot sauce. Adjust gochujang and gochugaru for desired spice level.
  4. Add rice and fish cakes to pan. Then, stir to absorb onion and garlic flavor.
  5. Add spicy sauce to rice and fish cakes, mix well.
  6. Heat water in pan until bubbly. Cook mixture on low for 10-15 mins for soft, chewy rice cakes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  7. Add extras to your food (cabbage, carrots, boiled eggs) before finishing cooking.
  8. Add green onions on top of the rice cakes and sauce once desired texture is achieved.
  9. Try hot Tteokbokki, a traditional Korean dish with a unique mix of spicy flavors and textures.

Tips:

  • Use less gochujang and gochugaru for milder sauce.
  • Add peppers, mushrooms, or tofu to customize your Tteokbokki.
  • Add toasted sesame seeds for extra special flavor.
  • Tteokbokki can be a snack or main dish.

Great job! You've made delicious Tteokbokki - chewy rice cakes, savory fish cakes, and a fiery sauce that will leave you wanting more. Enjoy Tteokbokki as street food or a main course and broaden your taste buds with more Korean dishes.
